Tuesday's Team Building
Sep. 10th, 2009 09:09 amWell, afore the week sweeps by in a blur, a quick update on Tuesday's team-building thing.
Which wasn't actually as terrible as I had at first feared.
The morning was given over to Yorkshire Passion, a group set up to promote Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire, to try and get us all to be enthusiastic about this place what we live in 'n all that.
Now, as it happens, this was possibly tangentially relevant for some of our colleagues, who are public-facing bods on things like help desks, but for us cave-dwelling code monkeys, the appropriate application of some of this stuff was somewhat less than immediately apparent.
Still, it was enjoyably presented, and believe me I've sat through plenty worse, so 'twas surivable.
In the afternoon we had three different sets of tasks to complete. There was, as rumoured, Wii Bowling, which was fun, although our team, triggered by the mass exodus of other, quicker groups, left the Wii Station at the start of our third round, so we only had two sets of scores up on the Master Scoreboard of d00m compared to our compatriots' three sets. I suspect this put us at a disdvantage for the comparing of scores on the doors at the close, but am not bitter. At all. Much. No, really; I'm totally fine with it.
Then there was a slightly examination style logic quiz and general knowledge test. Our team didn't do too badly at those. And then there was this thing called 'gutterball', where we had to transfer a marble from one end of a patio to the other, by means of holding short lengths of plastic tube. We did at least achieve the task, but our overall time sorta sucked (we were 2 minutes slower than the quickest).
But it was, overall, good fun. Whether it was actually useful is another matter, and I didn't like the venue at all (the place was a 'mock' castle - it had stuffed deers' heads on the walls, suits of armour standing to attention, and the toilets were labelled 'Knights' and 'Maidens'. Ick)).
But hey, not so bad overall... and if they do another one, then I'll offer to put together a music/photo/film quiz for it...
