I agree with you on the timetabling - it just doesn't work in practice really.
Which is a great pity in some ways - because if JKR had made it work, we'd have so many more staff to play with, which would've made at least the world of fanfic much, much richer in terms of the canon placeholders *cough* characters that we could call on to fill certain shoes...
