I haven't read any Russian fiction at all, but feel that I ought to do so - mebbe they'll be in the queue next year.
Overall, though, I thought it was an excellent plot, and the 'dozen eggs' as a magnificent conceit to carry the whole tale through. The bitterness, too, of the finale to the quest was welcome (esp when you recall how the inhabitants of Leningrad are faring at that precise time).
