The Heat Is Off

Next in the continuing saga of one office's struggle to maintain a comfortable ambient temperature about its working climes...

One of the guys from Estates has just come into the office to tell me that the radiators were going off 'now, as we were told'.

Huh?

It transpires that all the radiators are to be fitted with thermostatic valves, which, given the sweltering thermal onslaught we had to endure yesterday, can only be a good thing. Would've been nice to have had some kind of warning, but it's still good news.

So after sweltering all day yesterday, you're going to freeze today? :-/

Hope you had a jumper/sweatshirt with you, and that the thermostatic valves do the trick.

Reading this entry, and your twitter feed, things don't look terribly sanguine for a decent office climate for a while to come. I hope it all gets sorted soonest!

Well, as luck would have it, yesterday was pretty mild.

And although the installation had its hiccups (resulting in not being able to use the PC for nearly three hours), they had eventually managed to get everything back together and working without ceding too much ground to the permafrost...

Well, the 'slight problem' did result in a protracted hiatus, as the PC was unplugged and stuff so that the engineers could shift the desks and get to the radiators. And there's a suspiciously damp patch on the floor tiles by my radiator, but I *think* it's all sorted now. Here's hoping :-)

Well, as you may have noticed, December's been pretty mild to date, so we weren't in danger of freezing. And besides, the room had been cooked to sufficiently high a temperature that it took a little while for things to drop to simply 'warm'.

It did take them *much* longer than it should've to get things operational again, but all now seems properly functional, which should hopefully make life a little more bearable.

Why on earth would the thermostat installation affect computer use? Did they have to cut all the power for awhile?

I hope your indoor weather is nice and mild from here out!

Because all the power sockets and network sockets are in the wall above the radiator - to get the radiator out they needed to move the desks away from the wall to give themselves workspace, and this meant that the cables wouldn't stretch the required distance.

Consequently, they had to unplug everything. They just failed to tell us when it was OK to reconnect...

Actually, it's been pretty mild, so far, this December. Forecasts are that we're in for a cold snap soon(ish), though.
