slowfox | Eight-Legged Salad

I was, to be frank, slightly disappointed to find a dead spider amongst the lettuce leaves in last night's salad.

Eschewing the opportunity to increase my protein intake through the ingestion of deceased arachnid, the rest went in the bin.

Whilst it was certainly exciting in its own way, I suspect that finding one of Willy Wonka's Golden Tickets in a bar of chocolate would have been a much more palatable discovery.

I appear to be the crazy one out here since I find that more 'interesting' than 'eww'.

Then again, my flat is also home to several hundred crickets and flour beetles.

Most of the time spiders and I can co-exist - this wasn't a particularly large one, but it was most definitely outside the realms of what I would define as my comfort zone.

I used to have a spider phobia before I came here. Then, after seeing about 3 spiders a day in my appartment every day, I just became indifferent...mostly because I expect to find them just about anywhere. There was one in the toilet bowl this morning for instance. Stupid thing drowned itself... >.>;;

Sometimes spiders freak me. As Peter Jackson says of them, it's the way they move, and then stop.

And then move.

And then stop.

But overall they're mostly harmless, and I won't bother them if they don't bother me. Dying in my salad constitutes 'bothersome'.

Lamentably, I don't own a thesaurus - I just have a predilection for, erm, overly florid prose, on occasion ;-)

I admit, though, it did take me a few mental passes to come up with the 'Eschewing...' sentence.

But it was worth it, wasn't it? ;-P

I can pick up spiders so I can't say I've much of a phobia for them but I wouldn't like to keep on eating a salad I'd found a dead spider in.

It depends on the spider's size, together with it's level of activity, as to whether I'll pick it up or not... I have to confess that some of them creep me out, whereas others I'm fine about.

An ex-spider amongst the salad does not enhance an evening meal, trust me on this.

I've been using some chemical weapons in my flat to decrease the number of creatures, I confess. I may have lost a lung or two (or perhaps three) in the process, but it was necessary. There just were too many of the things for comfort.

Gosh, you could be right!!! And all these people have been trying to tell me that salad was healthy. I knew I was right, all along... *reaches for deep-fried Mars Bar for (second) breakfast*
